Demographics
Somalia has a population of around 10.7 million according to UN estimates in 2003, 85% of whom are ethnic Somalis.
There is little reliable statistical information on urbanization in Somalia. However, rough estimates have been made indicating an urbanization of 5% and 8% per annum with a large number of cities in rapidly growing cities. Currently, 34% of the Somali population lives in towns and cities with the percentage increasing rapidly.
Because of civil war, the country has a large community of the diaspora, one of the largest across the continent. Millions of Somalis living abroad, and this excludes those who inhabit the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, Yemen, northeastern Kenya and Djibouti.
