Since the collapse of the state, Somalia has transformed from what Siad Barre called “scientific socialism” to a free market economy.
Agriculture is the most important sector, with livestock accounting for approximately 40% of GDP and around 65% of export earnings. The nomadic and semi-nomads, who depend on livestock for their livelihood, constitute a large portion of the population.
After livestock, bananas are the main export, sugar, sorghum, corn and fish are products for the domestic market.
The small industrial sector, based on the processing of agricultural products, accounting for 10% of GDP.
Analysts are enthusiastic about the production of marble in Somali territory Mulderia.
Millions of Somalis receive food aid.
