Religion
The Somalis are Sunni Muslims completely.
The influence of Christianity was reduced significantly in 1970, when the church schools were closed and missionaries sent home. There has been archbishop of the Catholic cathedral in the country since 1989, the cathedral of Mogadishu was severely damaged in the civil war of January-February 1992.
The Somali constitution discourages the promotion and propagation of any religion other than Islam. This sets the Somalis apart from their immediate African neighbours, many of whom are Christians (especially the Amhara and others of Ethiopia) or adherents of indigenous religions.
